Courses can be completed as part of a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or Master of Education, endorsed in Literacy Education. Our courses emphasise the ability of students to think critically across a wide variety of literacy topics, with a focus on bridging research with practice through Indigenous and Western perspectives.

We offer courses in:

How does the programme work?

The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Literacy Education) includes 120 credits.  If you study full-time, you'll take 120 credits per year or 60 credits per semester.

The Master of Education is a 180-credit qualification that includes two parts. You must complete Part One (course work), before moving to Part Two which includes engagement in research via course work or research via thesis. 

Course work (professional inquiry) pathway (60 credit course with research report)

To progress to Part Two through the professional inquiry pathway you will need a minimum B grade average in Part One.

Research (thesis) pathway (90 credit thesis)

To progress to Part Two through the research thesis pathway you will need to achieve a minimum B+ grade average in Part One.

258720 Foundations of Literacy

This compulsory course, offered in Semester 1 and Semester 2, focuses on two aspects:

  • The foundation of literacy development across a variety of areas including reading, writing, oral language, and contexts (ECE, primary, secondary) and the cognitive and distal factors that can influence literacy development.
  • Meeting the literacy needs of students at the classroom (Tier 1) level of practice through a focus on teaching approaches.

258722 Understanding and Addressing Literacy Needs

This course focuses on the nature of literacy learning difficulties, how to identify and assess literacy learning difficulties, and interventions to meet the needs of children with literacy learning difficulties at a Tier 2 or 3 level.

258725 Critical and Current Topics in Literacy

This course focuses on current topics in literacy that are critical in nature. The topics are updated over time and currently include topics such as examining structured literacy and decodable texts, morphology, AI comprehension, speech and language development and literacy, and communication and behaviour.

Where are these programmes available?

The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Literacy Education) and Master of Education are studied online and include opportunities to interact with your peers across the literacy courses. 

Both programmes are open to international students studying online from outside New Zealand.
