What is the structure of these programmes?

Postgraduate Diploma in Education

You may enrol in this qualification with or without a specialisation (endorsement).

Postgraduate Diploma in Education without specialisation

If you are completing the PGDipEd without a specialisation you will complete 120 credits from any of the endorsement schedules or elective schedule. This will allow you to construct a qualification individualised to your personal needs.

Postgraduate Diploma in Education with specialisation

You will complete at least 90 credits from the relevant endorsement schedule, including any compulsory courses. The requirements for each endorsement are set out in the schedule for the qualification. An additional 30 credits may come from any of the subject schedules, or from the elective schedule.

It is recommended that any compulsory courses are completed first.

Master of Education

The Master of Education is a parts-based qualification of 180 credits. That means you must complete the first part made up of course work, before moving to the second part made up of engagement in research.

You have a choice of two pathways towards your Master of Education:

  • the Research pathway involves both course work and research in the form of a thesis
  • the Professional Inquiry pathway follows a structure similar to a taught course. This is to scaffold you through the process of undertaking a professional inquiry culminating in a written research report.

Course work (professional inquiry) pathway

It is strongly recommended that all subject courses are completed first. The research methods courses should then be completed.

To progress to Part Two you will need a minimum B grade average in the first 120 credits of courses.

Research (thesis) pathway

It is strongly recommended that all subject courses are completed first. The research methods courses must then be completed.

To progress to Part Two you will need a minimum B+ grade average in the first 90 credits of courses.

Advanced entry

If you have completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Education, you may apply for credit towards Part One of the qualification.

You can choose one of seven areas of specialisation or complete the programme with no specialisation:
